Need For Organic Farming subsidies

Organic Farming: Organic farming is an agricultural practice that makes use of biological pesticides derived from plant or animal waste. Chemical Fertilisers are the main cause of soil deterioration, and nitrogen leaching causes the loss of Nitrogen in the Agriculture ecosystem. The other problems associated with chemical fertilisers are soil compaction, reduction of organic matter in the soil and loss of soil carbon.

It is important to mention that  soil carbon is needed to reduce climate change as Solid carbon is stored in soils all around the world as “soil carbon.” This contains carbonate minerals made from both organic and inorganic carbon found in soil. Regarding the global carbon cycle, soil carbon serves as a carbon sink, contributing to biogeochemistry, reducing climate change, and developing global climate models. Chemical Fertilisers reduce the soil Carbon

Chemical fertilisers are causing the decline of the agricultural yield which is continuously declining over time. The usage of artificial fertilisers has drawn criticism from economists and agricultural specialists, and the government has responded favourably by promoting organic farming. Crop rotation, animal manures, legumes, and other biological control methods are emphasised in organic farming to maintain soil productivity and tilth, give plant nutrients, and control pests like insects and weeds. Synthetic fertilisers are discouraged in favour of biological fertilisers.

It is crucial to practise organic farming, a comprehensive method of production management that maintains and increases the health of agroecosystems, including biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity. Numerous studies have demonstrated that organic agricultural techniques can result in even higher yields than traditional ones.

It is also possible to notice a significant difference in the soil health indicators, such as the potential for nitrogen mineralization and the diversity and quantity of microbial life, which were higher in the organic farms.

The incidence of insects and diseases was significantly reduced in organic farms due to improved soil health. The promotion of small-scale integrated farming systems has the potential to boost the economics of rural communities.

Under several central sector programmes, including the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), the National Food Security Mission (NFSM), and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, the government has made financial aid available to individual farmers through State Governments to adopt organic farming in the nation (RKVY).

Agroecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity, must be maintained and improved through the practice of organic farming, a complete way of production management. Numerous studies have shown that organic farming methods can produce yields that are considerably higher than conventional ones.

Additionally, there may be a discernible difference in the soil health indicators, which were greater in the organic farms. These indicators include the potential for nitrogen mineralization and the diversity and abundance of microbial life.

The enhanced soil health in organic farms dramatically decreased the prevalence of insects and illnesses. The economy of rural areas could be improved by promoting small-scale integrated farming systems.

The government has made financial aid available to individual farmers through State Governments to adopt organic farming in the country under several central sector programmes, including the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), the National Food Security Mission (NFSM), and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).

Organic Farming has several advantages over Chemical fertilisers.’ Let’s discuss some of the benefits of Organic Farming

  • High Demand
  • Economical
  • Generating Profits
  • Protecting Environment
  • Providing Nutrition

High Demand: Organic Farming has a huge demand because it promotes health. The agricultural produce is relatively free of toxins. India is the diabetic capital of the world and cardiovascular patients and cancer diseases are on the rise. People are looking for options to promote their health. Organic farming provides the required benefit and therefore the demand for the product is rising.

Economical: Organic Farming is economical as the chemicals and fertilisers are not warranted in organic farming. There is no additional cost needed for these unwarranted fertilisers which cause more harm than the benefit it provides.

Generating Profits: Organic farming uses less expensive inputs to produce the farming yield and produces more output and thus fetches more profits and a high return on their investment.

Providing Nutrition: Organic Products are healthier and have high nutrition as compared to chemical fertilisers.

Some of the Schemes by the Government of India, where the government provides financial assistance to promote organic farming.

  • National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA)
  • Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)
  • National Food Security Mission (NFSM)
  • National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMOOP)Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India
  • The mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH)
  • Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY)
